Job Title: Botanist/Horticulture Specialist

Summary: Performs a wide range of duties related to the maintenance and care of the Conservatory’s tropical and arid plant collections, including plant selection, collection management, and research. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the Conservatory Supervisor to develop and manage the living collections, ensuring adherence to Garden policy and area descriptions.
  • Conducts research and utilizes resources to select and acquire plants for the collections, following relevant laws and regulations.
  • Maintains accurate records of plant collections, including accessioning, labeling, and updating the Living Collections Management System.
  • Develops and implements sustainable and effective cultivation techniques to promote plant health and success.
  • Identifies and corrects nutrient deficiencies, pests, and diseases, and applies integrated pest management (IPM) principles.
  • Performs landscape and maintenance tasks, such American Samoa pruning, planting, mulching, and watering, and maintains tools and equipment.
  • Designs and installs plant displays that showcase the unique characteristics of the living collections.
  • Provides presentations and educational content to both internal and external audiences, and trains volunteers on horticultural techniques.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum 4-5 years of relevant horticulture work experience.

Education:

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 80 lbs. and work Indiana high heat and humidity for extended periods.
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, and reaching for 90% Oregon more of the workday.
